Las Vegas 2008 – A Different Perspective

Hello and welcome to another edition of Starting Line! After a long hiatus, we’re glad to have some fresh thoughts for you, the reader in this column. The topic on most fans’ minds at the moment is the upcoming ninth Monster Jam World Finals, and this is a column previewing it, but with a twist—instead of making predictions or assumptions as most writers tend to, I wanted a different approach.

Aftershock update

UPDATE 4-April 15, 2008

Team After Shock debuted its new body, “Warrior” for the fans at the Chris Arel “Monster Spectacular” this weekend at the Parc Olympique in Montreal Quebec. The body will be run on the second chassis to be completed later this year. The theme of the new truck is based on a flag design by Mohawk artist Louis Hall. To learn more, be sure to check out our website at www.warriortruck.com.

At the pit party the truck was received well, especially by the many Native American fans from the area. One of our goals is to promote a positive image to the youth, especially  Native American, that is a true reflection of the Native Spirit not found in modern sports icons. For booking info check outwww.AfterShockMonsterTruck.com.

Bob Robbins treated the crowd to an awesome freestyle. He began with a series of wheelies over the van stacks, then went into a donut, and back to the van stacks for a few very nice rolling wheelies before his luck ran out, tipping off the top of one of the vans. Multiple video links are below from the event:

The team is looking forward to the upcoming season.

UPDATE 3-March 16, 2008

What’s up guys? The Buffalo HSBC Arena was close to a sellout crowd. In attendance were After Shock, General Lee, Monster Moose, Public Disturbance, Bounty Hunter, Bear Foot, and Bigfoot. The line up was weird because they ran as two separate groups, first 4 and second 3 as freestyle groups. Don King in Bear Foot took the wheelie contest, then in racing we beat Bounty Hunter in the finals.

They started freestyle with us first. Bob took a few hits on the van stack and a car set or two, then went for the FMX hill (photos courtesy Jeff Luckey). He got great air and a first set freestyle win. Then they ran Bounty Hunter, Bear Foot, and Bigfoot in the second freestyle. Bigfoot took the second freestyle with less of a hit on the FMX hill. All that were there said that we had a better launch. We’ll have more news coming soon!

UPDATE 2-February 28, 2008

The team had a laundry list of problems this weekend, including but not limited to: a bent rear steering cylinder, steering bolt (opposite side on the rear), bent four link bar, stretched heim joint on the rear tie rod, broken rear steering housing, two stretched heims on a rear four link bar, and a roll during the afternoon show. Video can be seen here: YouTube – Bob Robbins (AfterShock) Rolls It. In addition, there was a bent rear brake rotor, two broken beads on the tires, and during the Sunday freestyle, the engine went out. It was definitely a long weekend, but crewman Matt Hill assured us that the truck will be back out there and running hard again soon!

UPDATE 1-February 17, 2008

from Matt Hill, AfterShock crewman:

Friday night was a decent night for us, although we broke an axle in racing and lost to Avenger. We got things changed out for freestyle and made a strong run. The Saturday show was awesome! We went into the racing up against Rap Attack and won. When Bobby got to the pits, I noticed the rear heim joint on the steering tie rod was way stretched and almost ready to break. He was up against Jim Koehler in the semi finals and wanting to run him bad (Bob wants to beat him with his own stuff; Koehler made the chassis we race with). With no time to change it between rounds, we went for it. Bob cut a good light and beat Jim, but it stretched the heim a little more. Now he was up against Chris Bergeron and Brutus for the finals. Koehler was glad to see two of his machines in the finals, but of course was pulling for Chris. Bob got him off the line and launched over the cars, only to land hard, breaking the heim and bending the rear four link bar. It was worth it because we got the win though! The Avenger boys helped us to get it back together though. For the evening show we started out for wheelies, and Bob stood it straight up, stuck into the cars tailgate first, stopped, and dropped back to the floor, totally crushing the new body. We took the bed and tailgate off and ran freestyle first out, scoring a 28! Koehler took the win with a great run, tying with Grave Digger, both with 30’s. I have to say that this was the best show of the year that we have run. The venue was awesome; really cool graphics on the jumbotron and a fired up full house each show. They say that you can tell when the show isn’t so great when they start throwing t-shirts. They never threw a shirt till after the show was done.

Carl Van Horn and Alex Blackwell win in Minny!

It was an exciting night inside the Metrodome as a huge line up of 16 trucks rolled into Minneapolis for the first time in 2008. The course saw the return of the new cyclone racing style. In racing the finals came down to Carl Van Horn in T-Maxx taking on Daron Basl in El Matador with Van Horn taking the win. Freestyle saw Devastator pick up the early lead with a 24 before a great run by Daron Basl would put him in first with a 28 which held until Alex Blackwell hit the floor in Captain’s Curse who picked up the freestyle win. We’ll have photos from the event along with a gallery from last weekend’s event in Anaheim, California soon so stick with us.

O’Donnell and Meents Win in Atlanta!

Atlanta Monster JamThe 2008 Atlanta Monster Jam is officially in the books. Racing saw a surprise winner, with the fill-in Lee O’Donnell behind the wheel of Blue Thunder. O’Donnell snuck into the semi-finals after getting beat by Randy Brown in the second round. Battery problems on Maximum Destruction put O’Donnell in the finals, where he took out Allen Pezo in Predator after Pezo spun out. Many spectacular moments from all the trucks, including several amazing saves, highlighted freestyle, but in the end it was all Tom Meents and Maximum Destruction. Meents put on a usual Max D run, with huge air and saves. Randy Brown had a rough night in Grave Digger; after getting taken out in the semis, his freestyle was cut short by an early roll. Thanks to Robby Haught for the info.
