The Koehler Scale | An Alternative Points System for the Monster Jam FS1 Championship Series

During our recent podcast the topic of the Monster Jam FS1 Championship Series points scale was brought up in discussion. While the FS1 Championship Series has been a welcome addition to Monster Jam, many have felt the scale used for determining points is a little unbalanced without much reward for consistency. One man who recognized this was Jim Koehler who has been a part of the FS1 Championship Series for the past two years. Koehler being the thoughtful gentleman he is shared with us his idea for a points scale and we decided to crunch the numbers and take a look at how things might’ve looked using his scale on the 2016 season.

The Basics of the Koehler Scale

One of the benefits to the current Monster Jam points scale for the FS1 Championship Series is that it’s very simple and very basic. You win, you get points. You lose, you don’t. While this adds some extra emphasis to winning, it eliminates any reward for consistency which is common point of emphasis in other motorsports championships. Koehler’s idea is fairly simple basing the points off of 16 for each competition as there are 16 trucks at every event. For the fastest qualifier and freestyle winner there is a bonus point available as well.

Racing

  • Fastest Qualifier earns 1 point
  • Donut Contest/Obstacle Course/Secondary Competition are available to score a point value between 8 points to 1 point. 8 points being the winner, 7 for second, 6 for third, and so on.
  • Racing competitors compete for a point value between 16 points to 10 points. Losers in round one earn 10 points. Semi-final losers earn 12 points. Your final round loser ears 14 while the winner earns 16 points.
  • You must compete in your competition in order to receive points.

Freestyle

  • Using tie breakers points will determined by overall finishing order in freestyle.
  • Freestyle winner earns 16 points plus a bonus point for winning the competition
  • 2nd place will earn 15 points, 3rd place 14, and so on down to 16th place earning a single point
  • Once again, you must compete in order to receive points.
